Top Universities in USA Accepting Applications for Fall 2025
Several top-ranked universities in the United States have begun accepting applications for their Fall 2025 intake across undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programmes. For Indian students, the United States remains the single most sought-after study destination, with over 330,000 Indian students currently enrolled — making India the second-largest source of international students in the US after China. The Fall 2025 application season is particularly significant because several universities have made permanent changes to their admissions policies, test requirements, and financial aid frameworks.
For undergraduate admissions, the Fall 2025 cycle marks the return of standardised testing requirements at many universities that had gone test-optional during COVID-19. Harvard University re-introduced its SAT and ACT requirement starting with the Class of 2029, citing research showing that test scores are among the strongest predictors of academic success at highly selective institutions. MIT had already reinstated its testing requirement in 2023. Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth followed suit. Indian students applying to these institutions are expected to submit SAT scores ideally above 1500, or ACT scores of 34 or above, alongside their academic transcripts, essays, and letters of recommendation.
For postgraduate programmes, the application landscape is more varied. Stanford University's application portal for master's and PhD programmes in engineering, computer science, and business opened in September 2024, with most deadlines falling between December 1 and January 15, 2025. MIT's School of Engineering sets its application deadline at December 15, 2024 for most PhD and research master's programmes. Carnegie Mellon University — particularly popular among Indian students for programmes in computer science, machine learning, and information systems — has deadlines ranging from December 5 to January 15, 2025 depending on the department.
University of California campuses — including UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego — are among the most applied-to destinations for Indian students, particularly for STEM programmes. UC Berkeley's College of Engineering deadline for Fall 2025 master's applications was December 15, 2024. UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering, home to highly ranked programmes in electrical engineering, computer science, and data science, closed applications on January 8, 2025. These universities offer a strong combination of research output, industry proximity to Silicon Valley and Los Angeles, and relatively lower cost of living compared to the northeast.
Financial aid remains a major consideration for Indian students. At the undergraduate level, a small number of institutions offer need-blind admissions for international students and meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. These institutions include Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Yale, and Amherst College. For graduate programmes, funding is typically available as teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowship awards, particularly for PhD applicants. Funded PhD positions cover tuition, a monthly stipend of $2,000 to $3,500, and health insurance — effectively making a US PhD free for admitted students who receive an assistantship.
The F-1 student visa process requires applicants to first secure an I-20 form from their university, then book a visa appointment at the US Embassy or Consulate and attend a personal interview. Indian students applying for F-1 visas in 2025 are advised to book their appointments as early as possible — in 2024, appointment wait times at the US Consulate in Chennai and Hyderabad extended to over 100 days during peak season.
The Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme, which allows F-1 students to work in the United States for 12 months after graduation, remains one of the most attractive features of a US degree. Students who graduate with a STEM-designated degree are eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving them up to three years of post-graduation work authorisation. During OPT, students can apply for H-1B work visas which, if approved, allow long-term employment in the United States. The combination of world-class education, industry proximity, and post-study work pathways continues to make the United States the aspirational destination for the most academically competitive Indian students.
