UK Universities Waiving IELTS for Indian Students

UK Universities Waiving IELTS for Indian Students
Several UK universities are now offering admissions without IELTS for Indian students who completed their education in English-medium institutions. Here is the full list of universities, eligibility conditions, and what documents you need instead.

Many universities in the United Kingdom have announced IELTS waiver policies for Indian students, recognising that the majority of Indian applicants have completed their entire education in English-medium institutions. This is a significant development that removes a longstanding barrier for Indian students who are clearly proficient in English but were still required to spend time and money — IELTS costs approximately ₹17,000 per attempt — on a test that, for many, was a formality rather than a genuine assessment of language ability.

The University of Edinburgh, one of the UK's most prestigious institutions and a member of the Russell Group, now waives the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants who have completed their most recent qualification entirely in English. The applicant must provide a medium of instruction (MOI) certificate issued by their school or university confirming that all teaching and examination was conducted in English. The certificate must be on official letterhead and signed by the registrar or principal. Edinburgh's waiver applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions across most programmes, with the exception of a small number of highly competitive courses in medicine, nursing, and law.

The University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, the University of Nottingham, and Queen Mary University of London have adopted similar policies. These universities now accept MOI certificates from recognised Indian institutions as an alternative to IELTS or TOEFL scores, provided the applicant's previous institution is affiliated with a recognised board or university such as CBSE, ICSE, state boards, or UGC-recognised universities. Coventry University, Brunel University London, and the University of Hertfordshire have been offering IELTS waivers for Indian students for longer and have well-established processes for evaluating MOI certificates.

The waiver policy does not mean that English proficiency standards have been lowered — it means universities are accepting an alternative form of proof. If your MOI certificate is not available, or if your previous institution cannot confirm English as the medium of instruction, you will still need to submit an IELTS score. In that case, the standard requirement for most UK postgraduate programmes is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no individual band below 6.0. For undergraduate programmes, IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 is typically acceptable.

How to obtain your MOI certificate: Visit your school or university's administrative office and request a Medium of Instruction certificate on official letterhead. Most CBSE and ICSE-affiliated schools issue this within three to five working days at no cost. For undergraduate degree holders, the university registrar's office issues the certificate. Some universities charge a nominal fee of ₹200 to ₹500.

It is also important to note that UK student visa requirements are separate from university admissions requirements. The UK Home Office requires international students to demonstrate English language proficiency as part of the Student visa application, and in most cases this still requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — IELTS for UKVI is the most common option. Always check the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) website and the specific university's international student admissions page to confirm both the academic and visa-related language requirements for your programme before applying.
